Like the original HBO series, “House of the Dragon” introduces many newer faces to U.S. television screens, filling its cast with actors well-known abroad for their work in the U.K. It also boasts Emmy nominee Matt Smith from “The Crown” and “The Amazing Spider-Man’s” Rhys Ifans among its main cast. The younger brother of Ser Harwin, Larys Strong is brought into the King’s court by his father. Larys is played by Matthew Needham, who has had small roles in Chernobyl, Sherlock, and Doctor Who. Even through this apparent power grab, Rhaenys clearly still had compassion for her family, expressing concern at Viserys' declining health. During House of the Dragon, Rhaenys and Corlys propose their young daughter Laena marry Viserys, however, the King instead opted for Alicent Hightower. The couple had three children, Aegon, Aemond, and Helaena, but none were named heir to the Iron Throne, with Rhaenyra holding that honor. Although initially Alicent wasn't bothered by this, she became convinced Rhaenyra was plotting against her family, and, as such, conspired to have Aegon named as heir. The prince was not loyal in his marriage to Rhaenyra, however, the pair did have two children, Prince Aegon the Younger and Prince Viserys. While generally kind-hearted and a peaceful man, with a distinct hatred of conflict, Viserys certainly had his moments of rage across the debut season.

By now fans have seen House Strong's entanglements with the Targaryens go tragically awry. Viserys' advisor Lyonel and Rhaenyra's lover Harwin were both killed by arson in Season 1, leaving the spymaster Larys in control of the family's wealth while he serves Alicent at King's Landing. Gwayne actually jousted against Ser Criston Cole in the book version, so there's no telling what other changes are coming for his character. Tom Taylor takes on the highly anticipated role of Cregan Stark, the Lord of Winterfell at the time of this series.

Ramin Djawadi, who composed the award-winning score for “Game of Thrones,” is returning for the prequel series. His work on “Thrones” inspired a world tour, in which the composer performed music from the series live in 24 cities from 2017 to 2019.

The 10-episode first season of “House of the Dragon” will debut on August 21 with weekly releases. If there's one thing fans of Martin's writing are excited for, it's this meeting of ice and fire in the flesh. English actor Kieran Bew is a recent Max star thanks to Warrior, so he should be right at home on this HBO fantasy.

The world of Westeros is set to expand with HBO's Game of Thrones prequel series, House of the Dragon, opening its doors to a new cast of characters in 2022. Six years after he loses his eye, Aemond has become a practiced warrior and a strong antagonist to his nephews Jace and Luke, with his style looking awfully similar to his uncle Daemon. He’s certainly no Tywin Lannister or Olenna Tyrell, but he’s better fit to help maneuver his daughter Alicent and her son Aegon toward the Iron Throne than most. Like many of Westeros’ best schemers, Otto also served as Hand of the King during the rule of Viserys.
Though he is the brother of King Viserys, Daemon resents the throne because Viserys refused to allow him to gift a dragon egg to his lover, Mysaria. Daemon is one of the greatest warriors in Westeros at this time and rides the dragon Caraxes. Daemon is also the uncle of Rhaenyra and will later become her husband, just one of his many marriages — though Mysaria stays by his side the whole time. He’ll likely be something of a Jamie Lannister-type in this series, though with a whole lot more ambition. Rhaenyra Targaryen is the oldest child of King Viserys and was born of his first wife, Aemma Arryn, and is his heir.
